Boze boeren, boze burgers en boze buitenlui, we schakelen over naar Den Haag. Daar is de Tweede Kamer aan het debatteren over STIKSTOF en daarmee de toekomst van de boer (= de keerl) in Nederland. Een dossier dat uitpuilt van dingen als Natura-2000 gebieden, kritische depositiewaarden, trekkers op snelwegen, trekkers op alle andere plekken, poep, pies, Johannen met Volle Broeken en sinds afgelopen week voor een zoveelste keer nieuwe kabinetsplannen om ten koste van de landbouwsector aan een modelwerkelijkheid te voldoen. Het gaat vurig worden, niet alleen tussen volksvertegenwoordigers onderling maar ook buiten. Voor het debat zijn allemaal boeren op trekkers naar Den Haag gereden dus dat kan chaos en heibel worden. In 2026 wonen wereldwijd meer dan een kwart miljoen ultra-rijke mensen in de Verenigde Staten, ruim twee keer zoveel als in China. Samen zijn deze twee landen goed voor circa 40 procent van alle ultra-high-net-worth individuals, terwijl groeilanden als India en Polen de snelste vermogenssprong maken.

De ranglijst van Visual Capitalist laat zien waar ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) zich concentreren: dat zijn mensen met een vermogen van tientallen tot honderden miljoenen dollars. Ze vormen slechts een fractie van de wereldbevolking, maar bezitten een “significant portion of the world’s wealth”, zoals de analyse het samenvat.

Aan de top van de lijst staan de Verenigde Staten, met ongeveer een kwart miljoen UHNWIs (ultra-high-net-worthindividual), waarmee het land de grootste vermogenshub ter wereld blijft. China volgt op afstand met bijna 115.000 ultra-rijken, wat neerkomt op minder dan de helft van het Amerikaanse aantal. Samen zijn de VS en China goed voor grofweg 40 procent van alle ultra-rijken in de ranking.

Daaronder volgen gevestigde Europese en Aziatische vermogenscentra als Duitsland, Frankrijk, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Japan, die de top tien completeren. Europa blijft daarmee een centrale regio voor ultra-rijke inwoners, met meerdere landen in de bovenste regionen van de lijst.

Opvallend in de cijfers is de verschuiving sinds 2014. India klom in die periode van de 13e naar de 6e plaats, en telt nu bijna 16.000 UHNWIs. Volgens de analyse is dat één van de snelste vermogensuitbreidingen onder grote economieën, gedreven door snelle economische groei en een boom in tech en kapitaalmarkten.

Polen springt eruit als grootste procentuele stijger: sinds 2014 groeide de ultra-rijke populatie daar met circa 90 procent. Ook Saoedi-Arabië, Vietnam en Indonesië behoren tot de landen met sterke groei, wat onderstreept dat nieuwe vermogenshubs vooral in opkomende markten ontstaan.

The FAA plans to replace its 1973 ban on civilian supersonic flight over U.S. land with a noise-based standard, potentially allowing aircraft to exceed Mach 1 as long as they stay below certain sound limits. The agency aims to finalize the rules by mid-2027, opening the door for companies such as Boom Supersonic and Spike Aerospace to operate quieter next-generation passenger jets over land. Longtime Slashdot reader schwit1 shared the notice (PDF) published Tuesday by the FAA. Forbes reports: Technological advances "will eliminate the old sonic boom," FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a statement. "This means we can ultimately repeal the ban from the 1970s on supersonic flight over U.S. territory while minimizing noise impacts to residents in communities along the route and near airports." The primary reason was public opposition to loud sonic booms. In the 1960s, a plane flying faster than the speed of sound -- about 660 mph at high altitudes -- created shock waves that traveled to the ground and reached human ears as a loud gunshot-like crack or thunder-like boom. Tests during that decade, including the Oklahoma City sonic boom experiments, found repeated booms broke windows, damaged property and generated thousands of public complaints.

In its 1973 ruling, the FAA stated that due to the limits of technology at that time, "a prohibition was needed to protect the public from sonic boom .... by preventing operations of a civil aircraft at a true flight Mach number greater than 1." Several years later, Air France and British Airways introduced Concorde, and were allowed to serve New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport as long as flights remained subsonic over U.S. land. Notably, "the prestigious London-New York service was the only truly profitable [Concorde] route, supported by high-powered business and celebrity travel," wrote a former British Airways network planner for Forbes in 2021.

Several U.S. companies are working on a new generation of luxurious supersonic passenger aircraft with much quieter sonic booms and improved fuel efficiency. In particular, Colorado-headquartered Boom Supersonic says it has pre-orders from United Airlines, American Airlines and Japan Airlines for its Overture jets, which will carry 60-80 passengers. Atlanta-based Spike Aerospace is developing smaller Diplomat jets for up to 18 passengers. Both companies' websites tout future transatlantic flights in under four hours.

On the eve of their last-32 date with Austria, Spain’s unassuming midfielder on team spirit and finding his rhythm after injury

At the Embassy Suites on Broad Street, downtown Chattanooga, the vans have pulled out for the last time. The day before departure, like every day, a small crowd of kids had climbed barriers and trees trying to get a glimpse of Spain’s players. A girl stood on a ladder and held a placard in each hand, raised above the fence. One said: “I’ve been here three weeks. I know you’ve seen me!” The other ran: “Please come out!” On Wednesday afternoon, Tennessee time, they did. They won’t be back.

Spain are leaving their base behind and heading to Los Angeles and, if all goes well, from there to Dallas. They do so with more doubts than there were before the World Cup started. Well, Fabián Ruiz says, maybe on the outside: inside, at the training ground where the last session has just finished before they fly west, it’s a little different.

Naomi Osaka cruised to a second-round 6-3, 6-2 win against the Russian qualifier Anastasia Gasanova. There was little worry for the four-time grand slam champion, whose serves and groundstrokes were stellar as she makes it to the third round at Wimbledon in back-to-back years.

There was a small moment of frustration in the second set, with Osaka stating “What the hell?” after hitting the ball out, which garnered some chuckles from the No 2 Court crowd. She then turned to her team to complain about Gasanova’s grunting but got on with business to win in straight sets.

The Japanese was candid in her on-court interview about her nerves, saying: “​I don’t rate my performance. I have to wait a bit to do that. My current emotion is that I am happy to win. I am glad to do it in straight sets.

“Tomorrow is my daughter’s birthday so I didn’t want to make her get on a plane on her birthday. I will practise a bit in the morning and then maybe take her to the park. She loves making new friends.”
