It was fitting that it was Mo Salah who scored to put Egypt ahead in their World Cup match against New Zealand a little over a week ago. The Pharaohs, for all their achievements in Africa, had never won a World Cup match. Fighting back from 1-0 down to the All Whites, Salah helped engineer a long-awaited victory, at the same time moving to within one of Egypt’s record goalscorer Hossam Hassan, also the team’s coach at this tournament.

“In years to come, we will remember that this was one of the achievements in history,” Salah said after the match, which finished 3-1 and all but secured the nation’s progression to the last 32.

We can all agree the Geopolitics World Cup has gone on far too long, so Football Daily is pleased to announce it is over. It monopolises everyone’s time, changes sleeping, eating and drinking patterns, leaving everyone tired and poorer. No one wants to stay up for further 2am BST kick-offs or attempt to watch a couple of games a day. Frankly, the process has been completely futile since the first ball was kicked.

Please hand over the trophy to France and save some carbon emissions (and the embarrassment of other teams). Just one of Mbappé, Olise, Dembélé, Rabiot or Barcola would be enough for most teams. Responding to Antony Crossley’s letter, as an American, I agree there are important reasons to berate our country, but chocolate?! There are a large variety of high quality dark, organic, and fair-trade chocolates available here if one knows enough to avoid the corporate swill. You could berate America for its almost universally over-salted restaurant food but folk from a nation that exalts Heinz baked beans for breakfast (so disappointing!) should be careful about starting food fights. The artist’s latest show is a staggering takedown of colonial history, warfare and the migrant crisis, featuring buttons by the tonne and richly perfumed tea

History has repeated itself all over Ai Weiwei’s vast exhibition of monumental sculpture in Manchester. The flags of long-lost nations hang from the ceiling, bronzes looted by dead empires have been recast and reclaimed, dilapidated ancient ruins have been rebuilt. Everywhere you look here, you will find death, exploitation, greed and suffering from across human history, brought back to life and put morbidly on display. The first thing you see is a black glass chandelier made of skeletons – The Human Comedy – and a wall covered in images of the most powerful bombs ever invented. Like a head on a stake, this is art as warning.

This massive, ambitious exhibition is the Chinese artist at his most monumental, and as a result at his most effective. His subject matter works best at enormous scale, blown up, expanded, shoved in your face. Lining the back wall of this warehouse is a giant inflatable dinghy, 100 metres long, filled with figures in lifejackets. Think you can ignore the migrant crisis? Not here you can’t, because Ai has taken everyday, normalised tragedy and made it into a monument. He spent years interviewing hundreds of refugees, meeting people desperate for safety and a new life and produced a huge amount of work about it. This is the culmination of that project. Is it a good-looking work of art? Not really, but it makes a point, and makes it loudly.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has begun its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time, using the world's largest digital camera to image the entire southern sky every few nights. The project is expected to catalog billions of stars and galaxies, track changing and transient objects, and generate an enormous dataset for studying dark matter, galaxy formation, asteroids, and unexpected cosmic phenomena. The New York Times reports: "This is the end of a 30-year wait," said Phil Marshall, the deputy director of the telescope's operations at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California, in a statement to The New York Times. "It's a major milestone for us." Astronomers expect this collection of data, known as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, to revolutionize their knowledge of our galaxy's birth, the invisible matter permeating the cosmos, what shaped the universe into the structure it has today and more. According to Dr. Marshall, the survey is designed to see everything, "even the things we don't know we're looking for yet," he said.

The team behind the observatory, a joint effort funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, unveiled several images of the cosmos that were jampacked with celestial goodness -- a peek at what the Rubin could do -- last year. Since then, scientists have been busy conducting final tests and reviews of the telescope's operations and systems. According to Bob Blum, the director of Rubin operations at the National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory, the team has also been hard at work ensuring that the telescope can operate reliably in different environmental conditions for the next decade.

Huishoudens met een variabel energiecontract kunnen vanaf vandaag meer gaan betalen voor gas en stroom. Energieleveranciers passen hun variabele tarieven traditioneel rond 1 januari en 1 juli aan. Door de gestegen groothandelsprijzen voor energie vallen de nieuwe tarieven bij verschillende aanbieders hoger uit.

Voor mensen met een vast energiecontract verandert er niets. Zij blijven de afgesproken tarieven betalen totdat hun contract afloopt. Ook huishoudens met een dynamisch contract hebben niet met deze halfjaarlijkse tariefwijziging te maken, omdat hun prijzen meebewegen met de dagelijkse markt.

Essent verhoogt tarieven met ruim 13 procent

Essent heeft als een van de eerste grote energieleveranciers de nieuwe variabele tarieven bekendgemaakt. Vanaf 1 juli stijgt de stroomprijs van €0,23808 naar €0,26914 per kilowattuur. De gasprijs gaat van €1,22537 naar €1,38952 per kubieke meter. Dat komt neer op een stijging van respectievelijk 13,0 en 13,4 procent. De terugleververgoeding voor klanten met zonnepanelen blijft ongewijzigd.

Volgens berekeningen van energievergelijkers betaalt een gemiddeld huishouden daardoor ongeveer 240 euro per jaar meer dan in het voorgaande kwartaal, afhankelijk van het verbruik.

Essent benadrukt zelf dat de huidige verhoging volgt op eerdere prijsdalingen. Vergeleken met dezelfde periode vorig jaar liggen de tarieven volgens het bedrijf nog altijd iets lager.

De energieprijzen op de groothandelsmarkt zijn de afgelopen weken opgelopen. Dat hangt onder meer samen met de onrust op de internationale energiemarkt en hogere gasprijzen. Energieleveranciers verwerken zulke ontwikkelingen uiteindelijk in de tarieven voor klanten met een variabel contract.

Wat kun je doen?

Wie een variabel contract heeft, kan zonder opzegboete overstappen naar een andere leverancier. Of dat verstandig is, hangt af van de actuele tarieven en het eigen energieverbruik.

Heb je een vast contract, dan heeft deze prijsverhoging geen directe gevolgen. Pas wanneer het contract afloopt, krijg je te maken met de tarieven die dan gelden.

Voor consumenten die twijfelen is het verstandig eerst te controleren welk type contract zij hebben. Veel mensen weten niet dat ze na afloop van een vast contract automatisch op een variabel contract zijn terechtgekomen.

Nog niet alle leveranciers hebben hun nieuwe tarieven bekendgemaakt

Essent heeft de nieuwe tarieven inmiddels gepubliceerd. Van andere grote leveranciers worden rond deze periode eveneens aangepaste variabele tarieven verwacht. Wie wil weten wat de prijsstijging voor zijn eigen situatie betekent, doet er daarom goed aan de nieuwe tarieven van de eigen energieleverancier te controleren zodra die bekend zijn.

Met een lengte van 227 meter ziet-ie er indrukwekkend uit: de Windpiper. Het is het grootste steenstortschip ter wereld en kan 45.500 ton aan stenen met zich mee dragen. Het schip ligt nu nog in de Waalhaven in Rotterdam, maar vertrekt binnenkort naar Noorwegen en de Baltische Staten met een belangrijk doel in tijden van internationale spanningen: sabotage voorkomen.

Op een van de zwaarst belobbyde geopolitieke dossiers van Brussel lijkt de gas- en oliesector haar zin te krijgen. Strenge EU-regels om de uitstoot van vervuilend methaan terug te dingen, zijn niet langer een vanzelfsprekendheid. Experts vrezen voor afstel na uitstel.
