Researchers who tracked more than 90,000 people over a decade found that sitting or lying down while awake for more than 30 minutes in one period each day was associated with an increased risk of cancer death. The risk increases for every additional hour of continuous inactivity, the findings suggest.

As soon as the World Cup draw was completed in Washington DC last December, the date went into the diary, circled in bold by every England fan that hoped to travel, and millions more who knew they would not. Sunday 5 July, Mexico City. If everything went to plan and Thomas Tuchel’s team topped Group L and won their last-32 tie, they would be going to the Azteca Stadium for the last 16.
There was another element in play. If Mexico won their group and advanced in the last 32, they would provide the opposition. Just imagine. England to play a critical knockout tie against one of the host nations in their back yard. It is a back yard where Mexico boast a fearsome record, where they feel close to invincible, owing in part to it being about 2,240 metres above sea level. The altitude can spin the heads of opposing players, burn their lungs. It does not affect Mexico.

Tuchel reveals Declan Rice came off ‘in terrible pain’
Thomas Tuchel says England will be at a “huge” disadvantage in the high altitude of Mexico City on Sunday when they face Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup as he lamented a Fifa rule that has shut down one possible acclimatisation plan.
The Football Association has looked into how the altitude will affect the England players and spoken to teams from other sports as part of its research. They included the British Olympic team. One of the findings is that if it is not possible to travel to the venue 10 days beforehand to get used to the conditions, then it would be preferable to go on the day of the game – arriving as close to kick-off as possible.

Ask almost anyone on the women’s tour who has the best backhand and most will say Amanda Anisimova. Ask them who the best server is and the American is not usually top of the list. On Thursday, though, she did her best impression of Serena Williams as she hit 20 aces to scrape past Sofia Kenin and claim a place in the third round.
With every win, Anisimova erases some of the memory of last year’s final, when she was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Iga Swiatek. But for a while early in the third set, when she trailed the former Australian Open champion 3-1, it looked like she wouldn’t make it. But when she needed it most, her serve came good. Nine of her 20 aces came in that deciding set and her serve got her out of a big hole.
