The hype around Paul Seixas is fully justified as the 19-year-old bids to end four decades of French disappointment

When you write about the Tour de France for the best part of (deep breath) 40 years, the same themes recur, constantly evolving and mutating. The contorted fortunes of France’s finest cyclists have been a constant narrative since 4 July 1990, when the late Laurent Fignon put foot to tarmac in the feed zone somewhere in the bocage between Avranches and Rouen. It was cold, dank and wet, which given the canicule concerns gripping France at the moment seems like a bit of history in itself.

Fignon had started as one of the favourites, but that was the beginning of the end for “the Professor”. The search for a successor to the five-time winner Bernard Hinault had begun in 1986, the Badger’s retirement year when the ephemeral heir apparent was Jean-François Bernard; 1990 was when the doubts gained pace, intensifying with each passing year and with each potential champion who emerged, went under the spotlight, and eventually crumbled: Richard Virenque, Luc Leblanc, Laurent Jalabert, Romain Bardet, Warren Barguil, Thibaut Pinot.

UK provisional peak of 37.7C shatters previous record by huge margin, while Germany hits all-time high of 41.7C

Last week’s heatwave across western Europe shattered national June records and set new all-time highs.

The UK recorded a provisional high of 37.7C at Lingwood in Norfolk on Friday 27 June, smashing the previous June record of 35.6C, set in 1976. Such a margin is exceptionally rare: temperature records are typically broken by 0.1C or 0.2C, not a remarkable 2.1C.

​Wielerfans opgelet: de Tour de France gaat vanaf dit jaar reclames laten zien zodra een renner een slok uit een bidon neemt. De organisatie wil daarmee aansluiten bij ‘commerciële innovaties’ die de afgelopen jaren in andere topsporten zijn doorgevoerd.

‘‘Renners drinken hartstikke vaak tijdens een etappe’’, legt een woordvoerder van de organisatie uit. ‘‘En als ze drinken kunnen ze toch niet demarreren of sprinten, dus de kijker mist eigenlijk niks. Dan is het natuurlijk zonde om die tijd onbenut te laten.’’

Met deze ‘logische stap’ sluit de Tour de France aan bij andere grote sportevenementen die meer advertentieruimte verkopen. ‘‘Ja, het levert een heerlijke zak extra centen op. Maar wij willen als vooruitstrevende organisatie vooral echt meebewegen met internationale ontwikkelingen in de topsport.’’

Ook diverse internationale omroepen reageren positief op het besluit. Zo verwacht de Duitse sportzender ZDF Sport+ Extra TV dat vooral de ‘bloedhete bergetappes’ veel extra advertentiemogelijkheden zullen opleveren.

Als de maatregel succesvol blijkt, overweegt de organisatie om meer momenten in de koers te commercialiseren. ‘‘Die eerste saaie kilometers in een sprintetappe, tijdritten van matige renners of kansloze ontsnappingen zijn logische kandidaten. Maar eerst eens kijken hoe dit uitpakt.’’

LONDEN (ANP/RTR/BLOOMBERG) - De economische activiteit in de eurozone is in juni gestagneerd, meldt marktonderzoeker S&P Global op basis van definitieve cijfers. De bedrijvigheid in het eurogebied hield daarmee vorige maand beter stand dan gedacht. Eerder werd voor juni nog uitgegaan van een krimp van de economische activiteit door de stijgende prijzen en verstoringen in de toeleveringsketen door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten.

De index van S&P Global die de algehele bedrijvigheid in het eurogebied meet, kwam in juni uit op 50. Dat is de hoogste stand in drie maanden. De index bevindt zich daarmee precies op de grens tussen groei en krimp. Een niveau van 50 of meer duidt op groei, daaronder op krimp. Eerder was voor juni nog een indexcijfer van 49,5 gemeld, na een krimpniveau van 48,5 in mei door de Iranoorlog.

De opwaartse bijstelling volgt op een herziening van de bedrijvigheid in de dienstensector, de belangrijkste motor van de economie van het eurogebied. Die kwam in juni uit op 49,4 tegen 47,7 in mei.

The European Union's proposed environmental rating system for datacenters may be amended in response to lobbying from IT industry heavyweights, making it easier to offset greenhouse gas emissions using clean energy certificates. According to the Financial Times, the European Commission is weakening its original proposals after pressure from datacenter operators and tech giants. The newspaper claims to have seen the revised draft of the regulations, set to be discussed by representatives of member states on Thursday. We asked the Commission for comment on the leaked draft. The Commission published a draft regulation in March proposing an A-to-G rating scale for datacenters, based on their energy and water efficiency. The system is intended to incentivize greater sustainability in their operations, especially as bit barn capacity is expected to expand greatly over the next decade, thanks to huge demand for AI and cloud services. That earlier draft specified that facilities could offset greenhouse gas emissions by investing in clean energy certificates, but only if the projects concerned were in the same region as the data campus itself. It is understood that this has been amended so that facilities operating in one country can offset their emissions by obtaining certificates from renewable projects in a different EU state. The proposed change was made at the behest of companies and lobby groups that argued it would increase their operating costs. The EU's efforts to press datacenters and other large energy users into adopting greater efficiency and sustainability measures have met with varying degrees of pushback. Last year, the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact (CNDCP) expressed concerns about standards for data campus efficiency the European Commission was considering, based on feedback from mandatory reporting introduced in the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). The group lists tech giants AWS, Microsoft, and Google among its signatories, as well as datacenter operators like Digital Realty, NorthC, and Vantage Data Centers. Also last year, the Cloud Infrastructure Service Providers in Europe (CISPE) trade body was critical of the EU's Water Resilience Strategy, warning that burdensome regulatory demands regarding water use might prompt operators to build outside Europe. Another body, the European Data Centre Association (EUDCA), issued a statement this week affirming its "unwavering commitment" to climate-neutral datacenters and sustainable digital growth. But it warned that Europe will not be able to "unlock the digital infrastructure capacity required for its AI and digital ambitions" without addressing structural challenges in the electricity system, including expansion of transmission and distribution grids, faster and more transparent permitting processes, and stable access to low-carbon electricity. Meanwhile, Europe needs a policy framework that integrates water and energy efficiency if it wants to keep growing datacenter capacity to support its AI and cloud computing ambitions, according to a recent report. The proposed environmental rating system is still listed as due for adoption in the third quarter of this year, but debate over the changes may push that back further. ®
