Bij een steekincident in Rotterdam-Noord is vrijdagmiddag een gewonde gevallen. Het slachtoffer is een man. Hij is naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. De politie heeft een verdachte aangehouden.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Een bredere discussie in de politiek en in de media over het coronabeleid had tot minder polarisatie kunnen leiden, zei Romy Quint, een van de oprichters van de coronakritische groep Vrouwen voor Vrijheid, vrijdag tegen de parlementaire enquêtecommissie corona.

Mensen hadden zich dan gehoord gevoeld en dan was het niet nodig geweest om te demonstreren, zei ze. Quint vond dat er te weinig ruimte was voor andersdenkenden in talkshows. Eerder gaf ze al aan dat mensen die kritisch waren op het coronabeleid zich niet vertegenwoordigd voelden door de politiek.

Coronademonstranten werden volgens haar als een groep "lastige gekkies" weggezet. "Daardoor ontstond een homogeen beeld" van de actievoerders, terwijl het om veel verschillende mensen ging, stelde zij. Volgens haar droegen media daaraan bij door alleen te berichten over het geweld bij protesten, in plaats van over de reden waarom mensen de straat opgingen.

Public health authority says 2,025 excess deaths probably an underestimate and that it expects toll to rise further

The number of deaths recorded in France surged by nearly 30% during the hottest week of the record-breaking heatwave that scorched much of Europe last month, the public health authority has said, adding that it expects the toll to rise further.

Public Health France said on Friday there had been “an increase of 29.1%, corresponding to 2,025 additional deaths compared with the previous week”. It said the figure was probably “an underestimate” and “mortality will rise further”.

Why write words about music, Hans Keller once asked, when you could just write music about music instead? His mid-century essays in sound were never more than an experimental curiosity, but one that exposed the acts of translation, mediation and re-creation we undertake without thinking every time we describe our favourite symphony or explain why a song makes us cry. Reversing the process, this curious concert by the Netherlands’ New European Ensemble (which travels to the Edinburgh book festival next month) invited music about words, as four composers responded to novels by Ali Smith.

Interconnectedness – paths that intersect, patterns that repeat, stories and lives that echo – binds the four books of Smith’s Seasonal Quartet. This project spins that web still wider in new commissions from four female composers: Australia’s Kate Moore, Alice Yeung from Hong Kong, South Korean Seung-Won Oh, and Italy’s Sara Zamboni. Pieces by Peter Maxwell Davies, Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Kinan Azmeh completed the sequence of narration and performance taking audiences through a cycle from autumn to summer.
