As Azzedine Ounahi put Morocco ahead early in the second half, his coach Mohamed Ouahbi wagged a delighted finger. There was, perhaps, relief there too. In February he replaced the most successful coach in Morocco’s history, Walid Regragui, who may not have been popular by the end, but the idea that his successor might surpass his achievements seemed almost impossible. That may still be a way off but, five months on, Morocco have become the first African side to reach the World Cup quarter-finals twice – and there’s not much doubt that they’re playing better.

Criticism of Regragui at the 2025 Cup of Nations, which Morocco hosted and may have won on appeal – although we’ll have to wait for the court of arbitration for sport ruling to be sure – seemed harsh to outsiders. He had taken Morocco to a World Cup semi-final and had lost only four of his 49 games in charge – among them that semi-final against France in Qatar and the third-place playoff against Croatia. St Petersburg governor reports no victims after ‘large-scale’ overnight attack that also hit Baltic port of Vysotsk

Ukraine launched a big overnight drone attack on St Petersburg and the surrounding area, hitting the city’s oil terminal and port infrastructure in the wider region.

The St Petersburg governor, Alexander Beglov, said the city had been subjected to a “large-scale” drone attack that had hit its oil terminal. He said there were no casualties and the aftermath of the attack had been dealt with.

In de binnenstad van Rotterdam vierden Marokko-fans zaterdagavond volop feest. De voetbalploeg plaatste zich voor de kwartfinales van het WK voetbal, na een overwinning van 3-0 op Canada. In grote delen van de stad verliepen de festiviteiten probleemloos, maar op de 1e Middellandstraat moest de ME ingrijpen.

In de binnenstad van Rotterdam vieren Marokko-fans volop feest. De voetbalploeg heeft zich zaterdagavond geplaatst voor de kwartfinales van het wereldkampioenschap, na een overwinning van 3-0 op Canada. Onder andere op de West-Kruiskade gingen Marokko-fans massaal de straat op. Rond de 1e Middellandstraat ontstonden er spanningen tussen de politie en de supporters.
