The French football federation president, Philippe Diallo, has condemned José Luis Chilavert after the former Paraguay goalkeeper said Les Bleus are “a squad from Africa”.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the racist remarks made by José Luis Chilavert against the French national team, which undermine the values of respect, fraternity, and diversity in our football,” Diallo wrote in a social media post on Saturday. “If he was once a great goalkeeper, this man has now fallen into disgrace.”

It was somehow in keeping with the bedlam that has gripped Mexico since Tuesday night when the their team beat Ecuador to set up a World Cup last-16 showdown with England on Sunday. There was talk of an incoming storm, which is forecast to bring the risk of flooding and affect a game talked up as arguably the biggest in Mexico’s history. There was a figurative one, too.

The kick-off would have to be brought forward from 6pm local time (1am Monday BST) to midday, Fifa was told on Friday, and there followed an intense amount of back and forth, so many different people and companies to consider. In the end, it was decided that it would have to remain at 6pm. There was a lot of energy expended for no actual change and on everybody hurtled.

Rond de Vaillantlaan en de Hoefkade gingen fans van Marokko de straat op. Rond 22.20 uur sloeg de sfeer om. Agenten werden bekogeld met glas, eieren, stenen, fakkels en vuurwerk. De twee agenten raakten gewond toen zwaar vuurwerk in hun richting werd gegooid.

Nadat de burgemeester een noodbevel had afgegeven werd de Mobiele Eenheid (ME) kort ingezet om de onrust te bedwingen. Er zijn arrestaties verricht voor verschillende strafbare feiten, waaronder belediging, baldadigheid en het niet voldoen aan bevel of vordering. De rust keerde kort na middernacht weer terug.

WASHINGTON (ANP) - Het festivalterrein op de National Mall in Washington, waar het 250-jarige bestaan van de Verenigde Staten zaterdag groots gevierd zou worden, is ontruimd wegens zware onweersbuien. Een paar uur voordat president Donald Trump zijn, naar eigen zeggen, "hele lange" toespraak zou houden, werd het festivalterrein geteisterd door harde windstoten en naderende bliksem.

Het was zaterdag zo'n 40 graden in Washington. Trump zou zijn toespraak houden voor een publiek van tienduizenden mensen, in de stijl van een politieke rally. Daarna stond een vuurwerkshow op de planning, waarmee de regering van Trump een wereldrecord wilde breken.

De autoriteiten hebben alle bezoekers gevraagd het festivalterrein te verlaten en te schuilen in nabijgelegen gebouwen.
