Elon Musk is trying to own it, competing powers are trying to fight in it and nobody seems to be regulating it. So who does space really belong to?

The last time I saw Laura Grego was in a tent in a baking field on the Welsh borders in May. The conversation on stage ranged from the dangers of space debris to how the law of the sea might pertain to outer space; from our sense of the sacred to our interplanetary futures. At one point Grego, a physicist, said intently, “People have to be aware of what is happening in space. Public knowledge has to catch up.” Three weeks later, SpaceX launched on the stock exchange, temporarily making Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire.

So, I ask her now, what is it that we should all know? Well, she says, the average person’s experience of space is about to change. If, so far, that has been “looking at the stars and being full of wonder, full of connection with the universe”, perhaps noticing the occasional streaking object that was not a shooting star, now “there are plans for tens of thousands more satellites, which would really change your relationship with what you see in the sky”. SpaceX, specifically, has just applied to a federal regulator for permission to launch up to 1m of them.

I’d done WarGames and Ladyhawke and was getting sent a lot of “young guy” parts. I was a little concerned at first because Ferris talks to the audience – I’d done that in two plays and didn’t want to it to seem like that’s all I can do. Meanwhile, my agent said: “You’ve been asked to do a John Hughes movie. You’re doing it.” I didn’t know much about John at the time but I kept hearing him being referred to as the “Spielberg of teen films”.

The success belongs to many more people around the world from Gaza to Latin America – even if the collegiate spirit of the team has yet to be mirrored in our public life

Just past midnight, the cheers erupted from blocks of lit flats in my neighbourhood in central Madrid. Hours later, people of all generations were still out in the streets in the middle of another tropical night, and not only because it was warm, with temperatures hovering close to 30C. In the big pedestrianised square Plaza de Olavide, fans had gathered around screens, some sitting on the ground while children and dogs ran around. A girl played on the swings, her Spanish-flag cape fluttering as she swung back and forth.

Argentinian Lionel Messi jerseys were visible throughout the crowd. Many fans gathered also at a nearby Argentinian bar. Not too surprising when you consider there are more than 400,000 Argentinians living in Spain. Messi, whose life and career are embedded with Barcelona, is a football hero in Spain too.

Het is voormalig EU-commissaris Thierry "you can run but you can't hide" Breton's (ontslagen wegens zelfs voor Franse EU-begrippen te onuitstaanbaar) knevelkooi genaamd de Digitial Services Act versus het laatste Westerse land ter wered. En in die veldslag komt Trump nu met zijn eigen 'Freedom of Expression Declaration', waarmee zijn team aan het lobbyen is bij Europese staatshoofden, in de hoop ook hen te laten tekenen. POLITICO.eu zag een conceptversie van de Declaration in en schrijft:

"Trumps Witte Huis zal de komende Algemene Vergadering van de VN aangrijpen om aan te sturen op een wereldwijde verklaring over 'vrijheid van meningsuiting'; volgens Europese wetgevers is dit een niet-zo-subtiele sneer naar de tech-regelgeving van de EU. (...) In de versie van het document die POLITICO heeft ingezien, wordt kritiek geuit op "nieuwe wetten" en "regelgevingskaders" die volgens het stuk de vrijheid van meningsuiting wereldwijd in gevaar brengen, en wel in "historisch democratische landen". (...) De ondertekenaars moeten zich ertoe verbinden te erkennen dat het bestraffen van vermeend onjuiste uitingen – zoals 'desinformatie', 'misinformatie' of 'haatzaaien' – de vrijheid van meningsuiting in gevaar kan brengen, tenzij die inhoud direct aanzet tot geweld."

Kijk, die laatste zin, zo zijn ze dan ook wel weer! Natuurlijk volstrekt onduidelijk wat het juridisch zou betekenen als EU-lidstaten deze 'verklaring' 'tekenen'. Waarschijnlijk heeft dit hetzelfde juridische gewicht als de FIFA Peace Prize, maar het idee telt.

ZOETERMEER (ANP) - Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) onderzoekt juridische stappen na de plotse afsluiting van de Merwedebrug voor vrachtwagenverkeer. De brancheorganisatie stelt dat de afsluiting terecht is, vanwege veiligheidsoverwegingen, maar vraagt zich wel af of de overheid als beheerder van de infrastructuur voldoende heeft gedaan om de huidige situatie te voorkomen.
