MAARSSEN/DIRKSLAND (ANP) - De burgemeesters van het Zuid-Hollandse Goeree-Overflakkee en van Stichtse Vecht in Utrecht hebben hun medeleven geuit na de fatale ongevallen die zondagavond en -nacht in beide gemeenten plaatsvonden. Bij zowel het ongeval in Dirksland als in Maarssen kwamen twee mensen om het leven.

Op de Westkanaaldijk in Maarssen botste een auto tegen een boom. De slachtoffers zijn vrouwen van 17 en 18 jaar. "Het is nauwelijks te bevatten dat twee jonge mensen zo plotseling uit het leven zijn weggerukt", schrijft burgemeester Ap Reinders van Stichtse Vecht op X. "Mijn gedachten gaan uit naar hun ouders, familie en andere naasten."

In Dirksland overleden een 33-jarige en een 18-jarige man toen ze met een voertuig vermoedelijk ook een boom raakten. Een derde persoon raakte zwaargewond. Burgemeester Ada Grootenboer van Goeree-Overflakkee zegt dat haar gedachten bij de nabestaanden zijn.

TEL AVIV (ANP) - De Israëlische krijgsmacht (IDF) bevestigt te zijn begonnen met een proef waarbij militairen gebieden in het zuiden van Libanon verlaten. Het plan is dat de Libanese strijdkrachten, die bekendstaan als zwakker dan Hezbollah, de controle daar overnemen.

De Verenigde Staten meldden eerder op maandag dat de proef was gestart. De IDF meldde uren later dat met de Amerikaanse en Libanese legers overleg plaatsvindt en planningswerkzaamheden worden uitgevoerd. Ook laat de IDF weten "krachtig" te zullen reageren op iedere schending van de overeenkomst.

De plannen komen voort uit onderhandelingen tussen Libanon en Israël. De landen sloten vorige maand een raamovereenkomst. Er zijn geen afspraken gemaakt over wanneer de IDF moet zijn teruggetrokken. De Israëlische premier Benjamin Netanyahu zei destijds dat de IDF zich niet zou terugtrekken uit het zuidelijkste deel van Libanon. Dat gebeurt volgens hem pas na de ontwapening van Hezbollah.

A team of firefighters saved the pup from the water in a mission that utilized boats, trucks and a drone

Firefighters rescued a small dog that had been missing for weeks after finding it swimming into the San Francisco Bay.

The dog had gone missing over the Fourth of July weekend, according to the Menlo Park fire protection district. But someone called 911 on 16 July to say they had seen a dog enter the bay near the Dumbarton Bridge in East Palo Alto.

A Paris judge authorised the night-time doping tests of the Tour de France leader, Tadej Pogacar, and his nearest rival, Jonas Vingegaard, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed on Monday that the International Testing Agency (ITA) petitioned the “Paris judge specialising in liberty and detention matters … to authorise the anti-doping tests that took place overnight between July 18 and 19.”
