VOIRON (ANP) - De Belg Jasper Philipsen heeft in de zeventiende etappe zijn eerste ritzege van deze Tour de France geboekt. Mathieu van der Poel hielp zijn ploeggenoot bij Alpecin - Premier Tech in de sprint in Voiron naar zijn elfde ritzege in totaal in de Ronde van Frankrijk. Olav Kooij werd derde na een spannende finale, achter de Zwitser Mauro Schmid.

De klassementsmannen deden het aan het eind van de etappe over 175 kilometer rustig aan. Zij kwamen op een achterstand van zo'n negen minuten binnen. De Sloveen Tadej Pogačar blijft het algemeen klassement comfortabel aanvoeren. Vanaf donderdag volgen drie bergritten.

De zeventiende etappe kon vooraf verschillende kanten op. In de eerste 60 kilometer stonden vier gecategoriseerde beklimmingen op het programma, waarvan de zwaarste van de derde categorie. Hier hoopten avonturiers als Van der Poel een gaatje te slaan. De resterende ruim 100 kilometer verliep grotendeels vlak, waardoor ook de sprinters nog hoopten op een ritzege.

Kanshebbers

De belangrijkste kanshebbers bleven lang bij elkaar. Van der Poel reed vooraan in een kleine kopgroep, maar het peloton bleef dichtbij. Door het hoge tempo bestond het peloton nog maar uit enkele tientallen renners, die na de beklimmingen ook weer aansluiting vonden bij de kopgroep.

Van der Poel liet groenetruidrager Mads Pedersen op 60 kilometer wegrijden uit de grote kopgroep. Samen met vijf andere renners kreeg de Deen een voorsprong van een minuut. De Belg Jasper Stuyven ontsnapte met nog 25 kilometer te gaan uit deze groep, maar zijn solo eindigde op 4 kilometer van de streep.

Daardoor draaide de rit toch uit op een sprint in Voiron. Van der Poel bleek ondanks zijn vele arbeid eerder in de etappe nog genoeg energie over te hebben om de sprint aan te trekken voor Philipsen. De Belg, die in de klassieke sprintersetappes steeds naast de overwinning greep, kon het nu wel afmaken. De Nederlander Rick Pluimers reed naar de vijfde plaats, Huub Artz werd zevende.

New defence secretary emphasises military will be spending priority over other departments under Burnham

France recorded more than 5,700 excess deaths during its June heatwave, authorities have said, as swathes of southern Europe continue to endure another record-breaking period of extreme temperatures.

The French national health agency said on Wednesday that it had recorded 5,764 excess deaths ⁠between ​17 June and 2 July, an excess mortality rate of 36%.
