‘He knows what he’s doing’: Burnham’s off-the-cuff remarks inspire headlines and headaches

New PM’s conversational tone is markedly different to his predecessor’s, but carries risk of sowing confusion

Before he became Britain’s prime minister, Andy Burnham promised to “do politics differently”. Just three days into his time in Downing Street, that approach is already being put to the test.

In the last two days, the prime minister has been accused of performing U-turns over raising the income tax threshold, raising taxes for higher earners and freezing private sector rents.

Anti-doping chiefs reject claims of Paul Seixas favouritism as Tour rivals cry foul

  • Home rider Seixas yet to be tested at night, unlike some rivals

  • Authorities deny French doping agency plays role in who is tested

Anti-doping authorities at the Tour de France have rejected accusations of preferential treatment towards Paul Seixas, the teenage French rider and home favourite who is placed fourth overall.

Seixas and his Decathlon CMA CGM team were tested, with the rest of the peloton, on Monday evening as part of the biological passport testing programme, but the 19-year-old has not yet been subjected to the nocturnal test that both the race leader Tadej Pogacar and the now-withdrawn Jonas Vingegaard underwent.

Saman and Sasan Oskouei’s Sculptures Puncture the Weight of Everyday Objects

Saman and Sasan Oskouei’s Sculptures Puncture the Weight of Everyday Objects

What good is a ladder without structural integrity? Artist brothers Saman and Sasan Oskouei consider this question in The Weight of Less, an ongoing series of pocked wooden sculptures. From a school desk to a door to an industrial pallet, each humble item is punctured with irregular yet cohesive holes, rendering their former functions impractical.

“As layers are removed, the objects lose their original purpose while gaining a new presence,” the artists tell Colossal. “The carved spaces expose hidden rhythms, patterns, and relationships within the material, allowing absence to become an active part of the work.”

The brothers are longtime collaborators and previously worked under the name Icy & Sot. Their practice often utilizes everyday materials like fences and grass for broader social, political, and cultural critique. Lighter both physically and visually, the sculptures in The Weight of Less speak to the Oskoueis’ more understated mode of working by inviting us to consider the objects that structure our daily lives.

Calibration Nobel

We would like to once again apologize to Dr. Jones for last year's mistaken announcement. We should really have double-checked the envelope for this award in particular.

Unclassifiable Artists

Using William Blake (aka “the patron saint of unclassifiable artists”) as an example, Evan Puschak’s latest video explores how society often rejects artists whose work doesn’t fit neatly into established categories and frameworks of criticism and commerce.

What you’re seeing here, these are not paintings. They’re prints of engravings from Blake’s illuminated books, which he designed, wrote, etched, colored, and printed himself using a technique that he invented. These extraordinary books are works of art that mix and synthesize categories. And as a result, the art world of the late 17 and early 1800s didn’t really know what to make of them. And Blake never sold more than a handful.
