Beginnings are important. As a writer, I’m all too aware of this: from the right introduction, the rest tends to flow. The same logic applies to drinks: a good beginning eases proceedings. For this reason, I am unbendingly particular about how I take my morning coffee and, if I’m drinking, what form an evening’s aperitif should take. Life’s too short for bad beverages, after all.

An aperitif is arguably less a specific drink than an appetite-whetting moment with a glass of something. But what? Typically, when it comes to wine, an aperitif will be light and crisp, with any fruit character at the more green or citrussy end of the spectrum. Brioche-y sparkling wine, be that champagne, crémant or something English, and dry sherry such as fino and manzanilla, with their savoury notes, are traditional choices to ready your palate for food.

Johannes Radebe, one of the three new presenters of Strictly Come Dancing, can barely contain his glee. Asked where they were when they heard they’d got the job, Radebe is quick to wind up his co-hosts. “We’ll never forget that call,” he grins. “It was a weekday afternoon and I was at home, preparing for that night’s performance of [West End musical] Kinky Boots. But go on, tell the Guardian where you two were.”

“We all got the same message, asking us to jump on a Zoom,” says Emma Willis. “We didn’t know if it was good news or bad news.” Josh Widdicombe picks up the story: “I thought, ‘Surely they wouldn’t tell me to my face if I hadn’t got it? They’d just text my agent or something.’”

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Asielminister Bart van den Brink (CDA) is in beroep gegaan tegen de uitspraak van de rechtbank Den Haag dat hij een asielzoeker niet mag terugsturen naar Italië. In Europa is afgesproken dat asielzoekers mogen worden teruggestuurd naar het land waar zij zich als eerste meldden. In het geval van Italië hield de rechter dat tegen, omdat de opvang daar niet op orde zou zijn.

Door problemen met de opvang houden rechters al jaren tegen dat Nederland asielzoekers naar Griekenland en Italië mag sturen. Het kabinet heeft onlangs afspraken met deze twee Zuid-Europese landen gemaakt die terugkeer wel weer mogelijk zouden maken. Maar de rechtbank Den Haag oordeelde in een zaak van een Russische asielzoeker wederom dat terugsturen niet mag.

De minister hoopt de hogere rechter ervan te overtuigen dat hij de Italiaanse regering op haar woord mag vertrouwen dat ze de opvang goed regelt, in juridisch jargon het 'vertrouwensbeginsel'.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Het veelvuldig gebruik van AI voor berichtgeving op sociale media van premier Rob Jetten past zijn geloofwaardigheid niet aan, zei hij donderdag tegen media. "Nee, dat vind ik echt onzin", aldus Jetten. "Driekwart van de Nederlanders gebruikt tegenwoordig elke dag AI als hulpmiddel. En dat geldt ook voor ons in het dagelijks werk."

De Volkskrant meldde dat de premier en zijn partij D66 op grote schaal kunstmatige intelligentie gebruiken voor socialemediaberichten. Het gaat dan volgens de krant om berichten op X, Instagram, Facebook en LinkedIn.

AI werd ook gebruikt bij gevoelige onderwerpen zoals een bezoek aan het Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork, blijkt uit het onderzoek van de krant. Volgens Jetten moet je altijd vooraf goed bedenken wat je wil zeggen. "En ook altijd controleren wat je uiteindelijk plaatst." Hij gaat gewoon door met het gebruik van AI voor dit soort berichten. "Absoluut."
