Het geboortehuis van Adolf Hitler in het Oostenrijkse Braunau am Inn is voor 20 miljoen euro verbouwd tot politiebureau. Dat zoveel belastinggeld is uitgegeven „alleen omdat Hitler er zogenaamd is geboren” stuit op onbegrip.

UTRECHT (ANP) - Steeds minder jongeren verblijven in gesloten jeugdhulpinstellingen, al is een volledige sluiting van dit soort instellingen nog niet in zicht. Volgens de laatste cijfers van de Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit (NZa) verbleven op 1 april van dit jaar nog 350 jongeren in de gesloten jeugdhulp. Dat zijn er 65 minder dan een jaar eerder, een afname van bijna 16 procent.

In de gesloten jeugdhulp worden jongeren van 12 tot en met 18 jaar geplaatst die door problemen een gevaar voor zichzelf of anderen kunnen zijn. Ze kunnen te maken krijgen met vrijheidsbeperkingen, zoals insluiting in een afzonderlijke ruimte. Daar gelden sinds 2024 strengere regels voor. De overheid wil de gesloten instellingen, waar door de jaren heen veel misstanden zijn gemeld, nagenoeg afschaffen. Rond 2030 moet dat zijn voltooid.

Het moet wel "zorgvuldig en verantwoord" gebeuren, benadrukt de NZa. "Deze jongeren moeten kunnen blijven rekenen op passende hulp."

De cijfers dalen al enkele jaren gestaag. Begin 2024 ging het nog om bijna 500 jongeren.

his building, named Kintore Terrace, was constructed in 1884 at the request of London-born immigrant William Henry Gray (1808-1896), an ambitious property developer with aspirations of Adelaide’s west end becoming its main commercial district. Gray arrived at the South Australian colony in 1837 aboard the John Renwick, and became a prominent contributor to the colonial city’s development, purchasing land in both South and North Adelaide and building upon them, resulting in considerable earnings by rent.
The terrace consists of six single-fronted houses and is notable for its substantial construction and facade composition, divided into bays by shallow pilasters. The brick detailing and cantilevered balcony with cast iron brackets are noteworthy, making the building an important example of Victorian housing.
Environmentally, the terrace contributes to a diverse streetscape, its scale and alignment help define the street, and was formerly complemented by nearby developments like the West End Brewery complex.
Significant modifications were undertaken during the early 20th century which saw the dwellings become primarily residential, their ground level shopfronts bricked and replaced by a single window, and the exterior painted white. The property later became occupied as Canadian Lodge.
The building, now Local Heritage Listed was fully restored to its original state in 2019, the shopfront windows reintroduced and the white paint stripped away, revealing the ornate red and cream brickwork to be in excellent condition.
