After a bigoted online backlash, led by Elon Musk, The Odyssey achieved a monster weekend – the latest example of a targeted takedown that didn’t work

Elon Musk was a man on a mission. Yes, he’s supposedly intent on colonizing Mars, or the moon, or maybe, if you give him some more time to move the goalposts, just a really, really tall mountain, but this spring, a more pressing task presented itself, a sequel to his early-2026 mission to post white supremacist rhetoric: take down Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which he decided was the latest of “woke Hollywood’s” attempts to spread racial animus (towards white people, of course) and win Oscars while doing so. Nolan, Musk explained to the trade publication Variety, was “pissing on Homer’s grave”, referring to the author of the film’s epic-poem source material.

As the final phases of the movie’s promotional campaign ramped up, Musk posted dozens of times on his self-owned social media platform with grievances related to the casting of Lupita Nyong’o (a Black woman) and Elliot Page (a trans man) in the movie, often spreading false statements about this casting existing to satisfy new Oscar requirements. (As detailed here, those new Oscar diversity requirements are extremely flexible, and often satisfied by studio-wide programs that have nothing to do with casting. The Odyssey did not need to hire Oscar winner Nyong’o to be eligible for awards.) Musk may be a divisive-at-best figure who large swaths of the population do not take seriously, but he commands enough attention and adulation from a vocal minority that plenty of online accounts were soon parroting his willful misunderstanding of Hollywood and The Odyssey. Many of them abruptly and hilariously zeroed in on the 2004 movie Troy – which the right flank of social media suddenly decided was a beloved masterpiece, rather than its own, far greater distortion of Homer’s epic poem The Iliad.

A concrete canal cutting through the Caatinga scrubland feeds a surface reservoir two and a half miles from Maria de Fátima Ferreira da Silva’s home in rural Brazil. The canal passes Sertânia and continues until it reaches Monteiro, the next town along, where it spills its precious cargo into the bed of the Paraíba River – a human-directed inflow into the seasonally dry waterway.

Such proximity to a reliable water source would usually be considered a blessing in the sertão, a vast outback in Brazil’s north-east known for its punishing droughts. But not for Ferreira, who was displaced nearly 20 years ago by the construction of the canal and now lives in a house without any water supply, despite the nearby reservoir.

October 2026 is shaping up to be a busy month for administrators as it heralds the end of several big products, along with the retirement of components that could mean sleepless nights for the ill-prepared. After the demise of Windows 10 in October 2025, sysadmins might have hoped for some respite from Microsoft's ax, but 2026 will see the demise of more beasts. First, there's the end of support for Office LTSC 2021, which means everything from Access 2021 to Word 2021 is for the chop. A move to LTSC 2024 is required to keep the support lights burning, or - and we don't doubt that this is Microsoft's preference - a switch to Microsoft 365. M365 isn't a great option for organizations steering clear of the cloud. The on-prem version is very much a snapshot of where things were at release (although security patches keep flowing). Speaking of on-premises, Windows Server 2022 will drop out of mainstream support on October 13, 2026. Extended support will linger until 2031. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach the end of the road on the same date. Windows 11 23H2 for enterprise and education will get until November 10 to tidy up their affairs. As for the more minor products? Publisher 2021 will wrap up decades of the Microsoft Publisher brand in October. First appearing as a desktop publisher for Windows 3.0 in 1991, it has had an inexplicably long life, which will come to an end once and for all in a few short months. And unlike the rest of the Office 2021 LTSC suite, there won't be anything to replace it (or its annoyingly proprietary file format). There are also services due for the chop that might cause headaches for those that fail to prepare. Entra ID Sign-In risk policies, formerly known as Identity Protection, is being retired on October 1, 2026. Microsoft wants admins to migrate to Conditional Access, and make sure their policies cover user and sign-in risk. Not done the update? Then risk protection will go away after the retirement date. A Register reader remarked, "Given how many orgs use O365 I can't see how disabling sign-in protection might go wrong." October 2027 looks quieter, with only SQL Server 2017 gasping its last. However, with the coming October loaded with already announced terminations, getting the corporate house in order well ahead of time would be prudent. ®

Een van de zwaargewonden raakte bekneld, maar deze persoon is volgens een woordvoerder van de veiligheidsregio inmiddels bevrijd. De woordvoerder spreekt van "een flinke klap".

AMSTERDAM (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - De Europese gasprijzen zijn in acht handelsdagen met meer dan een kwart gestegen. Dat komt doordat de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump de hoop op spoedig herstel van de gasleveringen vanuit het Midden-Oosten de kop in heeft gedrukt.

De gasprijs loopt op door verstoringen in de aanvoer van vloeibaar aardgas (lng) via de Straat van Hormuz. Ongeveer een vijfde van het lng in de wereld, voornamelijk uit Qatar, wordt normaal via die belangrijke zeestraat verscheept.

Op de toonaangevende Amsterdamse gasbeurs steeg de gasprijs woensdag zo'n 4 procent tot bijna 62 euro per megawattuur. Dat is nog wel lager dan in maart, toen de prijs piekte rond de 70 euro.

Winterperiode

Trump heeft gezegd dat hij "geen interesse" heeft in gesprekken met Iran. Ondertussen blijven de VS aanvallen uitvoeren op Iran en hebben de Houthi-strijders in Jemen gedreigd met aanvallen op de scheepvaart in de Rode Zee.

Europa wil in deze periode zijn gasvoorraden voor komende winter aanvullen. Dat wordt hierdoor echter bemoeilijkt.

"Je vindt de liefde pas als je stopt met zoeken." Het is zo'n dooddoener die je op verjaardagen en sociale media voortdurend hoort. Of het waar is, valt te betwijfelen. Maar er zit wel een interessante gedachte achter. Want zodra iemand koste wat kost "de ware" lijkt te willen vinden, kan dat een ongemakkelijk gevoel oproepen. Zoek je een partner of zoek je iemand die een leegte moet opvullen?

Natuurlijk is daar niets mis mee. Gezonde, gelukkige mensen daten ook. Niet omdat ze incompleet zijn, maar omdat ze hun leven graag met iemand willen delen. Toch ontstaat er een verschil zodra geluk volledig afhankelijk wordt van een relatie. Dan verandert liefde ongemerkt in een reddingsboei.

Misschien is de eerlijkste vraag daarom niet: Wil ik een relatie? Maar: wat verwacht ik eigenlijk dat die ander mij gaat geven? Gezelschap? Bevestiging? Avontuur? Als al die behoeften uitsluitend door een partner vervuld kunnen worden, rust er een enorme druk op een relatie nog voordat die goed en wel begonnen is.

Dat is opvallend, want de verliefdheidsfase duurt meestal maar kort. Daarna begint het gewone leven: de routine, de irritaties, de meningsverschillen. Dan verdwijnen de perfecte foto's en blijven twee mensen over die elkaar echt moeten leren kennen.

En juist daar gaat het vaak mis. Vraag mensen wat ze zoeken in een levenspartner en de antwoorden zijn verrassend eensgezind: vriendelijkheid, vertrouwen, humor, nieuwsgierigheid en emotionele volwassenheid. Toch maken we onze eerste selectie vaak op iets heel anders: uiterlijk. Dat is nu eenmaal de makkelijkste informatie om te verwerken.

Het halo-effect

Psychologen noemen dat het halo-effect. Al in 1972 lieten onderzoekers zien dat aantrekkelijke mensen automatisch positiever worden beoordeeld. Ze worden vaker als slimmer, socialer en competenter gezien, zonder dat daar bewijs voor is.

Dat mechanisme werd ooit pijnlijk duidelijk tijdens mijn studietijd. Een medestudent was een van de slimste mensen die ik kende, maar hij viel nauwelijks op. Hij was vriendelijk, bescheiden en zat meestal alleen voor colleges. Toen we eenmaal aan de praat raakten over een biologievak, ontstond een van de leukste vriendschappen die ik ooit heb gehad. Urenlang spraken we over wetenschap, psychologie en het leven.

Maanden later begon hij intensief te sporten. Hij kreeg meer zelfvertrouwen en zag er zichtbaar anders uit. Plotseling wilden dezelfde mensen die hem jarenlang hadden genegeerd ineens met hem kennismaken. Zijn karakter was niet veranderd. Zijn intelligentie niet. Zijn humor ook niet. Alleen de verpakking was anders.

Datingapps versterken precies dat mechanisme. Binnen enkele seconden beslissen we op basis van een foto of iemand interessant genoeg is. Maar een foto vertelt niets over nieuwsgierigheid, empathie of het vermogen om van een doodgewone dinsdag een leuke dag te maken.

Uren praten

Uiteindelijk worden gezichten vertrouwd. Lichamen veranderen. Wat blijft, is de kwaliteit van iemands gedachten. Kun je uren met elkaar praten? Daagt iemand je uit? Kun je samen stil zijn zonder dat het ongemakkelijk wordt?

Misschien begint echte liefde daarom niet bij aantrekkingskracht, maar bij nieuwsgierigheid. En misschien is dat ook de belangrijkste vraag voordat je überhaupt op zoek gaat naar een partner: bouw je aan een leven dat al betekenis heeft of verwacht je dat iemand anders die betekenis komt brengen?

Want vroeg of laat wordt ieder gezicht gewoon. De vraag is of je dan nog steeds wilt weten wat er in het hoofd van die ander omgaat.

Week na week en steeds vaker treffen Oekraïense onbemande langeafstandsprojectielen doel, vaak vele honderden kilometers achter de frontlinie. Olierafenarijden, krachtcentrales, maar sinds afgelopen 18 juli dus ook de warenhuizen van 'het Russische Amazon', namelijk Ruslands grootste webwinkel Wildberries (wiki). Het begon met een aanval op het grootste warenhuis namelijk in Elektrostal, slechts 58 kilometer ten Oosten van Moskou stad. En vanmorgen vroeg vond er een nieuwe aanval plaats op een warenhuis in Krasnodar (maps) in Zuid-Rusland nabij de Zwarte Zee.

Het doel lijkt het ontregelen van de Russische e-commerce-sector (zo'n 8,5% van het bnp en tienduizenden werknemers) te zijn en de war fatigue onder de Russische bevolking te blijven vergroten. Hier een lijst van de 20 grootste Wildberries-warenhuizen inclusief hun afstand vanaf de frontlinie. De verste werd als eerste geraakt, en het voelt erg onwaarschijnlijk dat Rusland het materieel heeft om deze de komende dagen nog adequaat te verdedigen. Eindeloos meer beeld, ook van de eerste aanval op 18 juli, na de breek. Mag het Slavische Slachthuis PLEASE een keer dicht.
