A historic night for England as they beat Mexico 3-2 in their World Cup last-16 tie was soured by an injury suffered by Jordan Henderson from falling over an advertising board in the post-match celebrations. The former Liverpool captain, who was an unused substitute, has been taken to hospital with a wrist injury that puts his participation in the rest of the tournament at risk.

Shortly after the full-time whistle, as England’s players went to celebrate in front of their fans, medical staff were seen rushing to the vicinity. Henderson was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher.

The firm’s share price has risen 80% under Allison Kirkby’s leadership – but pressure remains for her to deliver further growth

If timing is everything, then Allison Kirkby may have judged it perfectly.

Since becoming BT’s first female chief executive more than two years ago the company’s share price has climbed 80%, an investor-pleasing turnaround that has seen Kirkby well-rewarded with a pay and bonus package of £5.6m last year, the largest for a boss of the telecoms company in well over a decade. Early last year, Ivy*, a Chinese student living in Germany, got a phone call from the police. At first, she thought it was a scam. An officer said they needed her help with an investigation involving someone she once knew. What followed turned her world upside down.

The police told her that her former boyfriend, identified in court documents as Tong Z, had been investigated for sexual assault and covert photography. Then came the tougher blow: police showed her a number of nude photos Tong Z had secretly taken of her while she was asleep. Ivy, now 27, recognised herself, though she had no memory of the moment.

The ancient dispute over ownership of UNIX, and perhaps Linux too, has returned to court. Again. As The Register has explained many, many, times since this matter first went to court in 2003, the roots of the case are the 1998 alliance between IBM and a company called the Santa Cruz Operation which sold a version of UNIX for x86 CPUs. Those two companies, plus Intel and Sequent, created “Project Monterrey” – an effort to create a unified version of UNIX that could run on multiple processors. By 2001, Project Monterrey was close to delivering a unified UNIX, an achievement made possible by blending code from IBM and SCO. By then, a little project called “Linux” already ran on multiple processors. Big Blue decided Linux was the future and bailed from Project Monterrey – then allegedly contributed some Monterrey code to the open-source project and to its own AIX and Z operating systems. SCO felt it owned some of that code, so sued IBM. SCO and its successors struggled to survive, but interested parties kept the lawsuit alive because the chance to emerge as owner of parts of the Linux codebase, and IBM’s code, had the potential to turn into a colossal payday. The case and its successors ended in 2021, with a settlement that saw litigants agree to end the matter without IBM admitting fault. But by then, SCO had sold its software to a biz called Xinuos that decided to fight on. The Xinuos case has burbled along quietly since, and on June 22nd reached the milestone of a hearing. The matter has become a little more modern, if only because this hearing was held online and the presiding judge appeared to unwittingly be on mute at one point. But the arguments otherwise seemed to revisit Project Monterrey, debated the relevance of past litigation, contested who owned what, when they owned it, and how they could prove it. Xinuos argued IBM never had a license for SCO code. Big Blue argued that it did nothing wrong. The core issue seems to be whether Xinuos even has the right to litigate the matter, or if some ancient legalese in the original agreements means the window for legal argument has long since expired. The matter continues and appears likely to do so until either the heat death of the universe or the year of Linux on the desktop – whichever comes sooner. ®

TEHERAN (ANP/AFP) - De begrafenisstoet van ayatollah Ali Khamenei, de Iraanse opperste leider die aan het begin van de oorlog tegen de Verenigde Staten en Israël om het leven kwam, is maandagochtend in Teheran van start gegaan. Deze wordt gevolgd door een "enorme menigte", aldus de Iraanse staatszender Irib.

Nadat de kist twee dagen lang te zien was geweest in de Grote Mosalla, een religieuze en politieke plek in de Iraanse hoofdstad, zal deze door de stad worden gedragen. De stoet zal naar verwachting 10 tot 12 uur duren en langs iconische plekken gaan. Dinsdag gaat de kist naar het religieuze centrum Qom en woensdag vinden enkele plechtigheden plaats in Irak. Donderdag wordt Khamenei begraven in zijn geboortestad Mashhad.

KYIV (ANP/RTR) - Bij Russische raketaanvallen op Kyiv in de nacht van zondag op maandag zijn zeker tien mensen om het leven gekomen. Dat melden de Oekraïense autoriteiten.

Ook zijn er minstens 46 gewonden gevallen door aanvallen waarbij verschillende woongebouwen werden geraakt. Reddingsoperaties zijn nog gaande, volgens Tymur Tkachenko, het hoofd van het militaire bestuur van de Oekraïense hoofdstad. Mogelijk zitten er nog mensen vast onder het puin. Negen mensen overleden in de hoofdstad zelf, een andere persoon net buiten Kyiv. "De vijand valt aan met ballistische raketten", aldus Tkachenko eerder op Telegram.

Rusland meldt ondertussen dat het op verschillende plekken de afgelopen nacht tientallen Oekraïense drones heeft onderschept.

De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky zei zondag dat hij verwacht dat Rusland vanwege de NAVO-top deze week grootschalige aanvallen zal uitvoeren op zijn land. Afgelopen donderdag kwamen nog dertig personen om bij aanvallen op de hoofdstad.
