UTRECHT (ANP) - Klimaatdemonstranten van Extinction Rebellion (XR) proberen zaterdag de A12 te betreden. Dat ziet een ANP-verslaggever. Ter hoogte van Laagraven hebben enkele demonstranten rond 12.45 uur een poging gedaan. Ze voeren actie tegen subsidies voor fossiele brandstoffen. Ook Utrecht for Palestine (U4P) doet mee.

Een handjevol demonstranten probeerde de vangrail over te stappen maar werd tegengehouden door de politie, die op die plek handhaaft met twintig tot dertig agenten. Bij het tegenhouden werd even geduwd en getrokken. De politie meldt dat demonstranten worden aangehouden en verplaatst.

De demonstranten zitten in de berm langs de A12. De verslaggever hoorde dat de politie tegen hen zei dat ze worden aangehouden als ze daar blijven zitten. Rond 13.15 uur is de politie bezig met het wegvoeren van de demonstranten.

Domplein

Eerder blokkeerden voertuigen de A12, aldus de politie. Die blokkade is rond 13.15 uur opgeheven en daarbij zijn twintig aanhoudingen verricht.

De gemeente Utrecht heeft de demonstratie op de Ring A12 verboden. De actievoerders kunnen terecht op het Domplein. Burgemeester Sharon Dijksma liet eerder weten dat mensen die toch de snelweg op gaan vervolgd kunnen worden.

LONDEN (ANP) - Shell wordt ervan beschuldigd de rechtbank in het Verenigd Koninkrijk bewust te hebben misleid in een poging om te voorkomen dat het bedrijf daar voor de rechter moet verschijnen wegens olievervuiling in Nigeria. Dat meldt Financial Times op basis van juridische documenten die zijn ingediend bij het hogere gerechtshof.

De beschuldigingen, die Shell ontkent, maken deel uit van een langdurige rechtszaak die is aangespannen door een inheemse gemeenschap in de Nigerdelta. Deze eist een betaling van opruimkosten en een schadevergoeding voor decennia aan olielekken. De zaak komt naar verwachting begin volgend jaar voor de rechter en zou een van de belangrijkste milieuzaken kunnen worden waarmee het concern wordt geconfronteerd.

Shell heeft altijd volgehouden dat de gelekte olie is veroorzaakt door criminele bendes die olie aftappen uit het enorme netwerk van pijpleidingen.

Cornell Lab for Ornithology plans data linkup between app and population monitoring on eBird platform

The Merlin bird ID app will allow users to feed real-time bird identifications into one of the world’s biggest citizen-science biodiversity projects in an update it is hoped will aid conservation of at-risk birds.

Since 2021, the free Merlin app, created by the Cornell Lab for Ornithology, has used machine learning to provide an almost instantaneous sound-identification service for birdsong, along with an image for each bird identified. In future, the detections of bird species recorded by people will be automatically collected on the global online database eBird, which contains more than 2bn bird observation records.

Instead of a UFC event and poorly attended state fair, how about ditching the electoral college and a new season of Game of Thrones?

I hate birthdays, especially my own, which is ominously arriving next month. I used to love them, back in those days when I had something tangible to look forward to: getting my first car, graduating high school, my first legal alcoholic drink, a new Star Wars film that’s actually good. That time is long gone. I can do all those things I listed, plus I haven’t seen a good Star Wars movie in more than 20 years. What am I even celebrating at 42? A slightly paunchier waistline? A larger bald spot? If the present you’re getting me isn’t a free Turkish hair transplant, I don’t want it. I don’t relish being 42, but imagine if I were 250?

America (the country, not the band) turns 250 this weekend, and we’re all meant to celebrate that fact on the Fourth of July. Millions of dollars have been poured into marking the occasion, though few of the events hold much appeal for me. I didn’t watch the UFC event; I have no desire to watch a bunch of cars driving around in circles, and the PragerU Freedom Truck hasn’t even come to my town. I couldn’t even get to finally see Vanilla Ice live in concert. Like every birthday, a lot of money has poured into a day where no one has any fun.
