Op internet zijn afbeeldingen opgedoken van proefkonijn Gerben zonder makeup. Fans van het immens populaire knaagdier reageren geschokt na het zien van de foto's: 'Dit is walgelijk, mag dit weg?'

De foto's, die door een anonieme fotograaf zijn genomen in de laboratoria van cosmetica-gigant Estée Lauder, werden binnen een half uur tijd tientallen miljoenen keer bekeken. De meeste reacties zijn negatief ('Je zou er naast wakker worden', 'Mijn leven is een leugen', 'Als ik dit konijn voor m'n auto krijg rem ik niet'), maar er zijn ook mensen die het juist voor haar opnemen en haar natuurlijke looks prijzen: 'Het gaat óók om de binnenkant', reageert Hetty1963 en 'Al ziet ze eruit alsof ze uit elkaar is getrokken door vier intercity's, ze blijft denk ik toch gewoon Gerben', steekt Tessjuhhh het proefdier een hart onder de riem.

Gerben, bekend van onder andere de campagne 'Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline', heeft zelf nog niet gereageerd op de commotie. Maar volgens ingewijden is het dier altijd bang.

The mystery of the missing congressman has finally been solved. Almost four months ago Tom Kean Jr, a Republican, vanished from public view. He missed more than 100 votes, all while continuing to collect his full taxpayer-funded salary of $174,000 along with excellent benefits. The only explanation given for his absence was a cryptic statement from his office in late April saying he was dealing with a “personal health matter”. Kean’s father, former New Jersey governor Tom Kean Sr, further told CNN in May that his son was battling a temporary illness and would be back to work soon.

This week, Kean finally resurfaced and explained that he’d been absent due to inpatient treatment for depression. Why hadn’t he said anything about this earlier? Kean said he was “private person by nature”. Which is great, but maybe don’t choose a job in public service in that case.

As the US celebrates 250 years, the Declaration of Independence has been curiously absent. Yet its language on the consent of the governed is more relevant than ever

It’s America’s birthday. Ear-splitting pyrotechnics will be heard across the land tonight, as they were a few weeks ago, after the cage fight at the White House. On 24 June, the administration launched the Great American State Fair, with “spectacular flyovers” from fighter jets and stealth bombers. Six 18-wheel “Freedom Trucks” are barreling down the highways, bringing history-lite pop-up displays, mainly to red states. Later this summer, we will hear drivers revving their engines, deafeningly, as they leave skid marks around the National Mall during the Indy car race scheduled for 22 August. It’s gonna get loud.

But one guest is apparently not invited to the party. The Declaration of Independence, the reason we are convening, has been curiously absent from the lead-up. That feels strange for a document that essentially rewrote world history.

Mercedes’s Kimi Antonelli won the sprint race before the British Grand Prix after a feisty scrap with Lewis Hamilton who had led for the opening half of the short-form race here on Saturday. Lando Norris claimed third for McLaren with Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate, George Russell, in fourth.

In a frenetic and action-packed dash at the old airfield, Hamilton had led from pole as the crowd roared him round the track only for him to succumb to the superior pace of the Mercedes engine. He was powerless to resist when Antonelli came at him, but still put in a sterling effort to secure second place.

She reached the quarter-finals here in 2022 and is in fiery grass-court form. Samsonova, who reached the quarter-finals last year, has already upset the 15th seed Diana Shnaider this week.

SILVERSTONE (ANP) - Max Verstappen is als zesde geëindigd in de sprintrace van de Grote Prijs van Groot-Brittannië. De 28-jarige Red Bull-coureur moest de zege in de korte race op het circuit van Silverstone laten aan de Italiaan Kimi Antonelli in de Mercedes. De Brit Lewis Hamilton in de Ferrari werd tweede en de Britse wereldkampioen Lando Norris in de McLaren derde.

Antonelli liep met zijn zege verder uit in het wereldkampioenschap. Hij leidt met 179 punten voor zijn teamgenoot George Russell (136) en Hamilton (132). Verstappen staat zevende met 76 punten.

Verstappen kende een slechte start in de sprintrace. Hij kwam moeizaam weg en zakte van de derde naar de zesde plaats. Zijn teamgenoot bij Red Bull, Isack Hadjar, overkwam hetzelfde. Die viel van de achtste naar de twaalfde plek terug. Hamilton behield de leiding voor Antonelli. In de openingsfase met veel inhaalacties knokte Verstappen zich terug naar de vierde plaats. Hij passeerde Russell, die kort daarvoor met een knappe inhaalactie van de vijfde naar de derde plek was gegaan, maar ook weer terugviel.

Verstappen kon daarna niet voorbij aan Norris, die derde lag. Hij werd vervolgens ingehaald door Russell en Charles Leclerc in de Ferrari. In de Red Bull kon hij het tempo van de Mercedes en Ferrari niet bijhouden en moest op enige afstand genoegen nemen met de zesde plaats. Antonelli was Hamilton ondertussen voorbijgegaan en reed onbedreigd naar zijn eerste zege in een sprintrace dit seizoen.

NEW DELHI (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - India blijft nieuwe olieraffinaderijen bouwen om zeker te zijn van voldoende aanvoer, terwijl westerse landen juist raffinagecapaciteit afbouwen. Dat heeft de Indiase premier Narendra Modi zaterdag gezegd bij de opening van een nieuwe raffinaderij.

"Er is de afgelopen vijf decennia geen nieuwe raffinaderij in de Verenigde Staten gebouwd en ook in Europa is de capaciteit voortdurend gedaald. Maar India heeft zijn positie als 's werelds vierde grootste olieverwerkend land versterkt en we stoppen hier niet. De capaciteit zal blijven groeien", zei Modi.

De raffinaderij met een capaciteit van 180.000 vaten per dag in de westelijke staat Rajasthan, is naar verwachting de enige nieuwe raffinaderij die dit jaar wereldwijd in gebruik wordt genomen.

New Delhi voorziet dat de binnenlandse vraag naar brandstoffen sterk blijft, terwijl de overstap naar elektrische auto's langzamer verloopt dan gedacht. Daarbij verwacht India dat de export van geraffineerde olieproducten hoog blijft.
