Nine years ago, Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta’s foremost investigative journalist, was assassinated by a car bomb outside her home. The men who carried out the killing have been convicted or admitted their involvement. Nobody has been convicted of commissioning her murder.
Last week, a jury acquitted Yorgen Fenech, one of Malta’s most prominent businessmen, of complicity in the assassination and criminal association.

The humanitarian aid system is crumbling as funding shrinks, pressures increase and governments not only fail to protect civilians but are increasingly responsible for endangering them, a new report warned on Thursday as figures revealed 64 million fewer people received aid last year.
With aid contributions cut by 30% between 2022 and 2025 and thousands of aid workers losing their jobs, the humanitarian system has suffered one of its biggest contractions since being formed in the post-second world war era, according to the State of the Humanitarian System 2026 report.

Writer-director Claude Chabrol’s eerie 1969 masterpiece of frozen emotions and unspoken truths is now rereleased, alongside a Chabrol season at London’s BFI Southbank. This is the suspense thriller remade by Adrian Lyne in 2002 as Unfaithful with Richard Gere and Diane Lane and (partly) remade again this year as Minotaur, a bitter and brilliant theme-variation by the Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev. As for the original, watched again now, it does not in fact look like a classic noir thriller in the style of Chabrol’s hero Hitchcock, which is how it is often described, but more like something by Buñuel: an elaborate absurdist joke at the expense of the French bourgeoisie, a ballet of repression and fear.
The unfaithful woman of the title is the glacially beautiful but glassy-eyed Hélène, played by Chabrol’s then wife Stéphane Audran. She is cheating on Charles, played by Michel Bouquet, her prosperous husband and the father of their adored 10-year-old son. Charles has begun to suspect something is going on during his wife’s frequent trips to Paris, where she supposedly has appointments with the beautician, goes shopping or visits the cinema, but in fact has sex with the divorced writer Victor Pegala (Maurice Ronet) at his dishevelled bachelor flat. Charles phones the beauty parlour where she is supposed to be getting a treatment; she isn’t there. We see how this only confirms suspicions which have clearly accumulated in his mind like silt over months or even years.

Een dag nadat beweerd werd dat Netanyahu door zowel inlichtingendienst Shin Bet als de leider van de Emiraten 1,5 week voor 7 oktober gewaarschuwd werd voor een rampzalig Hamas-plan, en 1,5 week nadat Spaanse premier Sánchez Israël verantwoordelijk hield (wat dus nergens op gebaseerd was) voor de Marokkaanse bestorming van Ceuta, blijkt nu dat de Spaanse inlichtingendienst Sánchez van te voren had gewaarschuwd dat Ceuta bestormd zou worden.
RTL Nieuws schrijft: "Spanje wist wel degelijk van tevoren dat een stormloop op komst was op de exclave Ceuta. Dat blijkt uit openbaar gemaakte rapporten van de Spaanse inlichtingendienst. Op 29 juli sloeg de inlichtingendienst alarm. (...) Signalen waren er al op 27 juli. Tussen de vrijgegeven documenten zit berichtenverkeer van die dag, waarin een officier van inlichtingendienst CNI en de regeringsvertegenwoordiger in Ceuta het hebben over 'een dringende vergadering' op 29 juli met als onderwerp 'de kwestie van de zwemmers'. (...) Er zijn in totaal meer dan veertig documenten over de grensoversteek bij Ceuta; tot gisteren waren die 'staatsgeheim'. De druk op premier Pedro Sánchez om ze vrij te geven nam met de dag toe en kwam van alle kanten: oppositiepartijen, politievakbonden, Europese politici en juristen."
De boel is mooi, en dan ontkende hij (vorige week al) in het Spaanse parlement ook nog eens de conclusie van de Spaanse inlichtingendienst dat de Marokkaanse overheid de sturende kracht was achter de invasie: "Ik kan u verzekeren dat geen enkele instelling - noch de diplomatieke dienst, noch de Europese Commissie, noch enig internationaal orgaan - de Spaanse regering enig hard bewijs heeft geleverd dat Marokko het incident heeft gepland of uitgevoerd. Helemaal niets." Ondertussen blijven er nog altijd 7.000 van de oorspronkelijke 72.000 overstekers in Ceuta, met dagelijkse aanrandingen en minstens 15 verkrachtingen tot gevolg.
