Two people have died after a light aircraft on a “short flight experience” crashed in a field near Ongar in Essex, police have said.

The two-seat Cessna plane crashed in a field off Mill Lane, Ongar, on Tuesday after taking off from North Weald airfield about seven miles west, Essex police said.

New name recognises the playwright’s huge impact on British theatre with producer Sonia Friedman saying he would be ‘tickled pink’

The Duke of York’s theatre in the West End is to become the Tom Stoppard theatre in honour of the playwright who died in November.

The theatre is currently presenting Carrie Cracknell’s revival of Stoppard’s 1993 masterpiece Arcadia and the same play was produced there in 2009. The playwright’s wife, Sabrina Stoppard, said: “Tom was in his element whenever he had a play on in the West End, so I am thrilled to bits that this theatre will be named after him. It means that his memory will live on, not just through his plays, but also through this building.”

Consecrations by Society of Saint Pius X bring automatic excommunication for bishops – and crisis for Pope Leo

A rebel group of ultra-conservative Catholics has defied Pope Leo by ordaining bishops without his consent, which they declared a “sacred duty” despite it causing their automatic excommunication.

In a ritual-filled ceremony on Wednesday, streamed live from the Swiss village of Ecône, the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) went ahead with the consecrations of four bishops, one from Switzerland, one from France and two from the US.

ANTWERPEN (ANP) - Het dodental van de uitslaande flatbrand in Antwerpen is opgelopen tot zes, meldt de politie. Eerder was er nog sprake van vijf doden. De brand is nog altijd niet onder controle, maar wordt niet meer groter.

Volgens HLN zouden alle aanwezigen inmiddels zijn geëvacueerd, maar de brandweer heeft dat nog niet bevestigd. Zij worden opgevangen in een nabijgelegen zorgcentrum, waar ook slachtofferhulp aanwezig is.

Onder anderen de 92-jarige oud-burgemeester van Antwerpen Bob Cools en zijn vrouw wonen in het pand. Zij zijn overgebracht naar het ziekenhuis, al gaat het goed met hem, zei hij tegen HLN.

200 bewoners

In het pand op de Antwerpse Linkeroever wonen zeker tweehonderd mensen. De brandweer zei eerder nog niet te kunnen zeggen hoeveel mensen aanwezig waren.

De brandweer vermoedt dat het bedwingen van het vuur nog enkele uren kan duren.

Steeds meer politici gebruiken hetzelfde argument om klimaatmaatregelen af te zwakken: hun land is verantwoordelijk voor slechts een klein deel van de wereldwijde CO2-uitstoot. Als een land maar 1 of 2 procent van de mondiale emissies veroorzaakt, zou extra beleid nauwelijks verschil maken.

Voormalig Brits premier Rishi Sunak gebruikte die redenering al in 2023. Ook oud-premier Scott Morrison in Australië, de Duitse bondskanselier Friedrich Merz en de Italiaanse premier Giorgia Meloni wezen de afgelopen jaren op het beperkte aandeel van hun land in de wereldwijde uitstoot. Volgens hen is het onrealistisch om burgers steeds meer offers te vragen als grote uitstoters als China, de Verenigde Staten en India veel meer vervuilen.

Klimaatwetenschappers plaatsen daar echter belangrijke kanttekeningen bij. Zij wijzen erop dat niet alleen de huidige uitstoot telt, maar ook de historische bijdrage aan de opwarming van de aarde. Rijke westerse landen hebben sinds de industriële revolutie veel meer broeikasgassen uitgestoten dan veel andere landen. Bovendien beschikken zij over de financiële middelen en technologie om sneller te verduurzamen.

Ook het argument dat een individueel land weinig verschil maakt, houdt volgens experts geen stand. Als elk land met een relatief klein aandeel zou besluiten niets meer te doen, blijft bijna de helft van de wereldwijde uitstoot ongemoeid. Juist de gezamenlijke inspanningen van tientallen kleinere economieën bepalen mede of de mondiale klimaatdoelen haalbaar zijn.

Elke vermindering helpt

Volgens klimaatwetenschapper Piers Forster van de Universiteit van Leeds draagt iedere vermeden ton CO2 bij aan het beperken van toekomstige opwarming. "Toekomstige temperatuurstijging wordt bepaald door toekomstige uitstoot. Elke vermindering helpt."

Onderzoek van denktank Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit laat zien dat het '1 procent-argument' steeds vaker opduikt in het publieke debat. In tientallen landen met een relatief klein aandeel in de mondiale uitstoot verschenen de afgelopen jaren honderden uitspraken en opiniestukken waarin werd betoogd dat extra klimaatbeleid weinig zin heeft.

Klimaatonderzoeker Ella Gilbert noemt die redenering misleidend. Volgens haar maakt het voor het klimaat niet uit uit welk land de uitstoot afkomstig is: alle emissies dragen bij aan verdere opwarming. Juist landen met een grote historische verantwoordelijkheid kunnen volgens haar het verschil maken door het goede voorbeeld te geven.

GRONINGEN (ANP) - Het meisje van 15 jaar uit het Groningse Meerstad dat verdacht wordt van dubbele moord op haar ouders blijft negentig dagen langer vastzitten. Dat meldt het Openbaar Ministerie Noord-Nederland woensdag.

Het meisje werd op donderdag 18 juni aangehouden nadat de ouders, beiden 53, dood waren aangetroffen in het huis aan de Meerhoven. Kort na haar aanhouding werd al bekendgemaakt dat ze nog zeker veertien dagen langer zou worden vastgehouden.

"Gezien de minderjarigheid van de verdachte is het Openbaar Ministerie terughoudend in het doen van mededelingen", meldt het OM. "Zoals te doen gebruikelijk in het jeugdstrafrecht zullen alle toekomstige zittingen van deze zaak achter gesloten deuren plaatsvinden."

Over het mogelijke motief van de verdachte is niets bekendgemaakt.

In Zeeland wordt op steeds meer plekken stilgestaan bij het grote aandeel van de provincie in de slavenhandel. Tegelijkertijd ervaren vrijwilligers van Keti Koti Zeeland „een laatste stuiptrekking” van weerstand tegen die erkenning.

Citrix says it has returned to the mainstream server virtualization market with the release of XenServer 9. The hypervisor was a contender in the early 2010s but struggled to compete with VMware and Microsoft. By 2014, analyst firm Gartner suggested Citrix had stopped trying to compete for workloads other than its own desktop virtualization and network security products. Citrix kept the product alive without much fanfare for years and rebranded it Citrix Hypervisor. After a pair of private equity firms acquired Citrix in 2022 and folded it into an outfit called Cloud Software Group (CSG), XenServer became the name of both the product and a CSG business unit that announced its intention to return to the mainstream virtualization market. XenServer didn't do much as a standalone entity other than to create a trial three-host version of its product to show off its smarts and tease more profound offerings. Last week, XenServer used its LinkedIn presence to reveal that XenServer is "back under the Citrix umbrella." The Register's virtualization desk understands that was effectively an announcement that XenServer as a business unit is no more. On July 1, Citrix released XenServer 9. A statement about the release sent to The Reg opens with the assertion that the software "is built for organizations actively reassessing their virtualization strategy under cost pressure." That's code for people considering an alternative to VMware. "While cost is often the initial driver for evaluation, long-term platform decisions are ultimately determined by operational impact," Citrix added. "XenServer 9 is designed to reduce that burden by simplifying lifecycle management, upgrades, and ongoing system maintenance." There's a more detailed summary of changes here that lists the "core enhancements" in the new release as improved performance on NUMA hosts, support for secure boot, a new OS for the control domain, and use of the recently released open source Xen 4.21 hypervisor. Supported guest OSes include Windows 10 and 11, Windows Server back to 2016, RHEL, SUSE, Debian, Rocky Linux, and Ubuntu. Gooroom 2 – a Linux distribution developed by South Korea's Ministry of Science and Technology – also makes the list. Citrix says the new release supports "any workload" and "also enhances operational alignment in Citrix DaaS environments." That sounds a lot like the same stance Citrix took in the mid-2010s – and it's trying to make a virtue of the fact. "XenServer 9 is a pragmatic response to the pressure infrastructure teams are facing today," Citrix proclaims. "It reflects a market reality in which cost, operational simplicity, and stability are tightly interconnected requirements that must be addressed together." "In this context, platforms are no longer defined by feature breadth, but by their ability to deliver predictable economics and operational stability over time." Those "predictable economics" derive in part from Citrix including an entitlement to use XenServer in several of its licenses. Those licenses, however, are typically bundles of many products – including some that users don't always use or want – and can involve big price hikes. Citrix justifies its licensing as simpler than buying individual products, and claims bundles mean customers get better value and easier operations. VMware uses the same arguments, and that hasn't always gone down well with customers. Michael Warrilow, an independent analyst who specializes in server virtualization, told The Register buyers are wary of Citrix's licenses, and won't forgive its long neglect of XenServer. "XenServer is a viable hypervisor, but Citrix has been missing in action in server virtualization for years," Warrilow said, adding that he would only recommend XenServer for users who intend to persevere with Citrix's desktop virtualization products. The analyst argued that forks like Xen Orchestra represent more interesting and significant virtualization platforms. Speaking of which, version 6.6 of Xen Orchestra dropped on Tuesday, bringing scoped storage and network admin roles in the REST API, automatic snapshots before updates, and more work to smooth VM migrations between different hypervisors. ®
