While events celebrating America take place ahead of Fourth of July, the LGBTQ+ community faced a more complicated reality during their own month of celebration

Most people know that the first Pride was a riot – a 1969 protest outside the New York City gay bar the Stonewall Inn – was so historic that it changed the course of US history for queer and trans rights. But as America celebrates its 250th anniversary, queer and trans people are watching things go backwards into a more repressive era.

Attacks from federal and state governments marred a month of celebration, including in states with explicitly pro-LGBTQ+ elected officials and policies in place. And as other communities face attacks – whether through ICE’s deportation campaign or repression against protesters exercising the first amendment in speaking out against it – the American history LGBTQ+ people seem to be holding up most is one of protest and riot, a legacy that traces back to the country’s founding.

Ladidi Shaibu’s two siblings both gained asylum before the Trump administration’s changes to immigration policy. But instead of being allowed to join them, she is being deported to Uganda

Growing up and living with albinism in rural Nigeria was tough for Ladidi Shaibu. She and her two siblings with the condition were shrouded in stigma and lived in constant fear of being mutilated or killed. Her sister was attacked twice and her brother was kidnapped as a child by people who wanted to sell his body parts.

Three years ago, Shaibu, 35, entered the US via the border with Mexico and registered as an asylum seeker. Her brother had already been granted asylum and her sister’s case was soon to be successful, too.

In the Netherlands the country’s World Cup last-32 tie against Morocco was always going to be about more than football. When the Atlas Lions dumped Ronald Koeman’s team out of the tournament in a penalty shooutout after an epic contest, joyous 6am celebrations were sparked among the Moroccan community in Amsterdam. In The Hague, on the other hand, the atmosphere turned grim.

Approximately 440,000 people of Moroccan descent live in the Netherlands, and approximately 440,000 of them were asked the same question before this game: “So who will you support, then?” It was mostly good-natured, and the former manager Ron Jans displayed genuine interest when putting the dilemma to his fellow pundit Ibrahim Afellay on Dutch national television. Afellay, capped 53 times for the Netherlands, expressed and explained his support for Morocco. In the real world, the most common reaction has been one of understanding, if not sympathy, regardless of which side someone picked.

Oracle is moving to stop maintaining the macOS/x64 port of the Java Development Kit (JDK) from version 27, which is expected in September. JEP (JDK Enhancement Proposal) 8386091 states that "Oracle engineers will stop maintaining the macOS/x64 port as of JDK 27." A few days ago, while noting that the JEP was still in a draft state, a pull request to implement the deprecation was submitted by Mikael Vidstedt, senior director Java Virtual Machine at Oracle. Building the JDK for macOS/x64 would require setting a flag, and "there will be no guarantee that the port will build, much less function." Customers could buy an Intel Mac from Apple as recently as June 2023, when the last Intel-based Mac, the 2019 Mac Pro, was discontinued. That said, Apple is now hastening the end of support for Intel Macs, and, at the recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company confirmed that macOS 27 "Golden Gate" will not support Intel Macs, and that it will be the last version to include the Rosetta 2 compatibility layer for apps compiled for Intel. Java is one of many platforms removing or reducing support for Intel Macs. The Rust project demoted support to Tier 2 from Rust 1.90, released last September, which means that the compiler and standard library will still be distributed for the platform, but automated tests are no longer guaranteed to run, increasing the risk of platform-specific bugs. Python has listed x86_64-apple-darwin as a Tier 2 platform since November 2025, although Python's Tier 2 support is still relatively strong, with failures blocking a release and fixes required within 24 hours. The Node.js team downgraded macOS x64 to Tier 2 in May, and from early 2028, the Intel Mac platform will be designated as experimental, according to the current documentation on building Node. A note explains that from that time, "the project will no longer be able to test changes on any Intel-based macOS version… the project intends to continue creating universal binaries for versions of Node.js which are still in support which will be compatible with both Apple Silicon-based and Intel-based macOS versions but they will be untested." "Don't kill my Java, Oracle!" said a dev who had initially been wary of Arm Macs and bought one of the last Intel Macs, but it is not as bad as it sounds. One possibility is to run Linux on an Intel Mac, either directly or, more practically, in a virtual machine, and use the latest JDK on Linux. Further, updates to older JDK releases, such as the long-term support JDK 25, are expected to remain available for Intel Macs. ®

VALGA/VALKA (ANP) - Het Nederlands-Duitse hoofdkwartier dat de verdediging van Estland en Letland gaat leiden, heeft het bevel officieel overgenomen. In een Ests-Lets grensplaatsje op hooguit 100 kilometer van Rusland is het commando aan het zogeheten 1GNC overgedragen. Nederland zal het Estse en Letse grondgebied beschermen alsof het om eigen grondgebied gaat, verzekerde minister Dilan Yeşilgöz bij de overdracht.

Het eerste Duits-Nederlandse legerkorps, zoals het voluit heet, houdt zijn thuisbasis in het Duitse Münster. Enkele tientallen militairen worden in Estland of Letland gelegerd en gaan vandaaruit werken. Als Rusland de aanval zou inzetten, zou 1GNC zo'n 50.000 militairen kunnen aansturen. Behalve Nederland en Duitsland doen nog veertien andere NAVO-landen mee aan 1GNC.

Het 'tactisch hoofdkwartier' ter plaatse moet ervoor zorgen dat de NAVO bij zo'n aanval sneller kan reageren. Tot dusver vielen de drie Baltische landen nog onder een NAVO-hoofdkwartier in Polen dat het bevel had over de hele regio. Snelheid is van levensbelang voor de drie kleine buurlanden van Rusland, om niet onder de voet gelopen te worden voor ze hun verdediging kunnen organiseren.

Stationering

Het bevel over de Estse, Letse en NAVO-troepen die Estland en Letland beschermen, werd dinsdag overgedragen met een ceremonie op hun onderlinge grens. Het is nog onduidelijk waar de 1GNC-militairen die er worden gestationeerd precies worden ondergebracht. Zowel Estland als Letland zou ze graag verwelkomen.

Dat Nederland en Duitsland de leiding overnemen "toont dat Europa naar voren stapt en een grotere verantwoordelijkheid neemt voor zijn veiligheid", zei minister Yeşilgöz. De VS bouwen hun bescherming van Europa af. Op de 1GNC-landen kunnen Estland en Letland rekenen, verzekerde ze.

Op de MerwedeLingelijn tussen Dordrecht en Gorinchem rijden voorlopig geen treinen. Dat komt door een aanrijding met een persoon bij station Sliedrecht. Het duurt nog tot minstens 14:00 uur voor de dienstregeling weer kan worden opgestart. Het treinverkeer tussen Dordrecht en Rotterdam ligt ook nog plat.
